Adelaide Himeji Garden

2015 08 12 - WESA Travel - Himeiji Garden

The Himeji Gardens on South Terrace is a beautiful Japanese styled garden that is a delight to find right on the southern edge of the CBD. Nestled in the Parklands that surround Adelaide, Himeji is a tranquil place to gather your thoughts.

Entrance to the Himeji Garden

The moment I walked through the wooden gate, I was transposed into an entirely different place- Japan.

The garden has two classic styles of Japan, Kare Senzui, the dry garden, and Senzui, the lake and the mountain garden, which are cleverly designed. Kare Senzui’s rocks and sand evoke the presence of water and, while Senzui’s pond is simply magical.

As the heart of the Garden, the lake’s form is based on the character ‘shin’, which means ‘heart’ or ‘soul’. The calm water suggests purity and tranquillity of the heart, which Buddhists believe is necessary if you are to achieve enlightenment: the ultimate happiness. Water flows into the lake from a small waterfall which recalls the wild mountain torrents of Japan.

Of course, the kids weren’t interested in the history or purpose of the garden but they enjoyed running on green grass and watching the ducks swim. And watching them smile makes me doubly happy!

This well-maintained Japanese garden is a hidden gem in the city of Adelaide. Entrance is free but keep in mind that they close at 5.30pm. Click here to find out more about the Himeji Garden.
